ABOUT MAKENZIE

My Background

In 2016 I received my bachelors degree in nursing with a minor in human and family development. I worked as an ICU nurse, specializing in the cardiac intensive care unit. I completed my Integrative Health Practitioner program under Dr. Steven Cabral. Additionally, I have completed various courses such as Iridology and Sclerology by Nichole Hosein, Emotional Regulation and Brain Retraining courses by Lauren Keller, APRN. I am both a CellCore and CBH practitioner, and receive continuous education through Dr. Jessica Peatross via Wellness Plus.

I met my husband, Jordan in nursing school. We were chemistry lab partners. *Insert pun about having more than just chemistry.* He runs the IV and strength and conditioning aspect of Shift Health and Wellness. Together we have the most wonderful little boy. He is the love of our lives and a big reason why Shift exists!

My Story with Chronic Illness

My body began giving me symptoms at an early age. They started quiet and got louder and louder, until 2018 when my life changed forever. I developed sudden extreme difficulty breathing. This air hunger lasted all day and night. I went from intense exercise five days per week to being unable to walk more than a few feet. My heart was always bounding and would often change extreme rates at rest. It never stopped pounding- the worst feeling- and caused me to live in constant fear. I developed a chronic nagging cough. These symptoms lasted for over three years. I traveled across my entire state going from specialist to specialist and receiving dozens upon dozens of tests. To put it into perspective I saw eleven different specialties and within those specialties I saw over 25 different providers. I even consulted with several very intelligent intensivists whom I worked alongside. Meanwhile, my list of symptoms just continued to grow. No one had any idea what was going on because on the outside I looked “normal.” That’s the rub with chronic illness.

After being discharged from the hospital I was sent to get additional lung testing. The respiratory therapist came up to me and said, “It seems like you have exhausted all your options. I am the last person to ever suggest this, but why don’t you try a more natural route?” I had hit my rock bottom, and I was willing to try anything.

This lead me down a journey of researching about bioaccumulation and environmental toxins. At this point I believed I knew why I was sick, but it took a very long time to find a provider who believed me. I was talked out of my intuition time and time again. We wanted to start a family, and I had gotten myself to a place where I was about 45% better. I thought that was just how it was going to be forever. Well, because I didn’t know how to address my root causes, pregnancy and postpartum were a whole different ball game- knocked me straight on my butt.

All this to say, I know what it’s like to be gaslighted. I know what it’s like to live with mast cell issues, autoimmunity, Lyme disease, mold, anxiety, OCD, postpartum depression, heavy metal toxicity, skin issues, and the list goes on.

But, I also know that healing from all those things is possible. It takes time. I am still on my journey, but I have come SO far, and so can YOU!
